Developing a Sleep Routine

We can all get into a bit of a bad sleeping pattern and into bad habits especially if you have a busy mind at night (like myself!).

So to combat this I have put together a few tips and tricks for when it comes to developing a relaxing sleep routine that will help towards improving your sleep and night-time habits.

Tip 1 - Signal Your Brain That It's Bedtime

Have something that triggers your mind that it is now time to get into your sleep routine. Whether this be getting on your pj's, making a cup of decaf tea, reading a few pages of your book, drawing your blind/curtains - anything that alters your brain that you are going to be starting your sleep routine.

The importance of doing this is to signal to your brain that you are starting a relaxing routine so the brain knows it should start to slow down and relax now.

Tip 2 - Have a Skincare Routine

Whether this routine be for 2 minutes or 15 minutes, I would highly recommend having a skincare routine. The reason why having a skincare routine is good is because it helps look after your skin but it is also something nice and peaceful to do after a hard days graft. Imagine you've come home from work, the children are going crazy or you've had a bad day but none of that matters because you have a little chunk of time to yourself to focus on looking after your skin. You could also look up online how to do a facial at home so you can really treat yourself!

Tip 3 - Find Something Relaxing To Do

Your sleep routine is enhanced by relaxing your mind and body therefore find something that you find relaxing. It could be getting some fresh air on a walk, having a bath, simply not doing anything! Whatever brings you enjoyment and peace, I would recommend doing.

Tip 4 - Empty Your Thoughts

If you have a busy mind like myself, I would highly recommend having a notebook or a place where you can write down all the thoughts inside your head so they're out of your mind and you're not trying to remember or think about them when you're trying to relax and get off to sleep.

Tip 5 - Have a Regular Bed and Wake Up Time

By having a specific time you go to bed and a specific time you wake up, it will help you to get into more of a routine and you will wake and fall asleep more naturally.

Tip 6 - Turn Off Technology

Also, when you are starting your sleep routine I would highly recommend turning your phone off or putting it on airplane mode at least an hour before you go to bed so you're not interrupted during your moments of peace and so the blue light from your devices doesn't disturb your sleep pattern.

Tip 7 - Listen to Something Calming

If I am ever struggling to get to sleep I like to put the sound of the beach on a low volume so I can relax and listen to the white noise of the waves crashing against the sand. Something about listening to the sea is super calming and relaxing to me and helps me get into a deep sleep.

Tip 8 - Leave the Bedroom For Sleep

For quite a lot of people this isn't always possible, especially if you are living at parents houses or just don't have the space, but I think it is good, if you can, to make your bedroom a relaxing space for just sleeping and doing your sleep routine.

If this isn't possible then perhaps light a couple of candles or put on a diffuser to change up the environment and to make your space more relaxing so your brain recognises the transition from work to relaxing.

So there are some sleep routine tips that I hope will help when it comes to developing your own sleep routine for 2021. To help you track your sleep I have created a sleep tracker which you can download here.
